Miss Pennypincher: save money on your wedding
Wedding Dress BridalResearch by Alliance & Leicester found that most people end upwith a significant budget shortfall, and spend about £3,500more than the £15,900 they expect the big day to cost. However, it is possible to cut wedding costs substantially withsome careful planning, and the starting point should always be toset a strict budget to work around, and to allocate how much youwant to spend on each part of the wedding. One of the biggest expenses of any wedding is the reception, but tokeep costs down, think about tying the knot midweek rather than ona Saturday. Wedding venues tend not only to have greateravailability during the week than at weekends, but prices are oftenmuch cheaper. Whichever day you decide to get married, don't forget to try tonegotiate on costs – you might be able to get a discount ifyou haggle. The website www.cheap-wedding-success.co.uk has some good suggestions for inexpensive reception venues. Itrecommends starting with your local council website, as this oftenenables you to hire buildings that may have been turned into localauthority centres for training or education. Local sports clubs are also worth a look, and hire charges areagain likely to be low. As well as the reception, wedding dresses can be a major expense, typically costing around £1,000, but it is always worthasking the shop manager if they have any ex-display dresses. I managed to pick mine up for a bargain £99 in a Londonstore, and then had to spend a bit on alterations, but the finalcost was considerably less than the dress's original £980price tag. I don't think any of the guests guessed how little itset me back, or at least they were too polite to say so. Another alternative is to find a dress you like in a bridalmagazine and see if you can get a dressmaker to replicate it– this again often works out more cheaply than buying from abridal shop. A final option worth considering for wedding dresses is to visitOxfam. You may not want a second-hand dress, but 90 per cent ofthose that are sold are actually brand-new, originating fromcatwalk shows and wedding retailers. The typical selling price of an Oxfam wedding dress is about£250. Oxfam has nine shops with bridal departments. Visit thewebsite www.oxfam.org.uk/shops/content/bridal.htm or call 0845 300 0311 for a full list of those near you. When it comes to stationery, think about making your owninvitations, orders of service and menus. It needn't be difficultwith the help of a computer and printer, and could help save youhundreds of pounds. There are several websites that can help withthis, including www.weddingcrafter.co.uk , and www.weddingdiy.co.uk The latter, for example, specialises in DIY wedding stationerykits with prices from 70p to £1.40 for invitations. You canalso download templates from the site for use with the invitationsyou order. Think about whether you could enlist the help of friends or familymembers when it comes to photography, making bridesmaids' dresses, chauffeuring their vintage car, or preparing some of the food. If you still find costs spiralling out of control, then you couldask friends to contribute to the cost of the wedding itself, ratherthan buying you a conventional wedding present. For example, by using the website www.youbuymywedding.com , guests can pledge money towards the part of the wedding theywould like to help pay for – from the hire of the receptionvenue to the wedding cake. Couples pay a registration fee of£49.95 to use the site and they then get a reference numberwhich they can include on their invitations. The number enablesguests to log on to the couple's own page and make their pledge. However, bear in mind that there is also a 4.75 per centadministration charge in addition to the registration fee –so for every £100 pledged by your guests, you will receive£95.25 to help pay for your wedding. Whatever you do, try not to get into debt paying for your wedding. If you have a long engagement ahead, start paying into a regularsavings account as soon as possible. These usually run for a yearand offer a high rate of interest that can boost the amount yousave. For example, Abbey's Fixed Monthly Saver 7 account pays animpressive 7.25 per cent gross interest a year on a minimum monthlyinvestment of £20. The maximum you can pay in is £250 amonth.
